Mt. Fuji and Mishima are situated in the same province. A large tall tree in the foreground, the wide base of Mt. Fuji and the top of the mountain emphasize expansion and altitude. This shows Hokusai's peculiar method of description. Travelers can be seen measuring the size of the trunk by joining their hands with one another.

In this print, Mt. Fuji, framed in the ring formed by an enourmous wooden tub in the making, rises distant and snow-covered beyond a stretch of dried-uppaddy fields where the earth has cracked in almost geometrical patterns. The old workman busy inside the tub is depicted with consummate skill, and the print is deservedly one of the most celebrated in the whole series.

A picture known for its geometrical composition. Several triangular forms, including that of the mountain, are breathtakingly bold, and the effect is added by the trailing smoke of the bonfire--depicted after the fashion of Duch copper plates in which Hokusai obviously took interest.

Two slopes are depicted parallel to each other--of Mt. Fuji and the Ryuganji Temple at Aoyama--a composition, no one will doubt, peculiar to Hokusai's brush. The leg of the beacon sweeping the ground in the left corner is probably the last thing to be expected.

Inume is a small post-town on the Koshu Kaido (The Highway from Edo to Kofu). The picture shows a wide expanse of space, neglecting detail. Men of small size give the feeling that nature is vast and magnificent.
